Eager for information?

Unlike most plants whose essential oil distills in a few hours, ylang-ylang is very parsimonious: its complete distillation is very long, lasting over 20 hours!

To maximize production, ylang-ylang essential oil producers perform short extractions, because the most fragrant molecules of ylang-ylang emerge in the first few hours, then gradually release molecules with increasingly weaker scents. The first three fractions, ylang-ylang "Extra Superior", ylang-ylang "Extra", and ylang-ylang I, are collected for use in perfumery. Fractions II and III (those released after ylang-ylang I), with increasingly less powerful scents, are used in cosmetics or to flavor bath products, for example.

Full ylang-ylang, or totum, includes all five distillation fractions. The result is an essential oil with a more subtle and balanced fragrance, and more active in the psycho-emotional sphere. This is the essential oil known as "totum", or "full".
