Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) essential oil has all the qualities one would imagine when looking at this delicate little flower.

10%... What?

This essential oil is diluted to a 10% ratio, which means 1 part essential oil to 9 parts fractionated coconut oil.

Therefore, to substitute a pure essential oil, you must multiply the quantity by 10 for any essential oil labelled "10%".

When it comes to concoctions, if a large quantity of 10% essential oil is used, you must reduce the amount of carrier oil in your recipes to compensate for the volume taken up by the carrier oil contained in the diluted essential oil.

Some small examples:

• Drops: a recipe calls for 1 drop of pure essential oil. You can substitute this pure essential oil with 10 drops of 10% essential oil. This tiny amount has no real impact on the total volume of a recipe.

• Milliliters: a recipe calls for 0.5 ml of pure essential oil. You can substitute this pure essential oil with 5 ml of 10% essential oil. In such a case, this quantity has a greater impact on the total volume of a recipe. Thus, you subtract 4.5 ml (5 - 0.5 = 4.5, right!) from the amount of carrier oil that the recipe could contain to adjust the total oil volume.

Precautions

• Avoid during the first 3 months of pregnancy as a precautionary measure.

• Pure Roman chamomile essential oil is very gentle and suitable for children and babies over 3 months old. In this case, however, it should be diluted at a rate of 0.25% to 0.5% (2.5% to 5% for 10% essential oil) for children aged 3 months to 2 years, 1% to 2% (10% to 20% for 10% essential oil) for children aged 2 to 6 years, and 1.5% to 3% (15% to 30% for 10% essential oil) for children aged 6 to 15 years.
