Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) is highly valued in cosmetics due to its extreme softness: it soothes and protects dry skin.

• It is a favorite in after-sun and after-shave care.

• It is prized for hair care due to the moisturizing and detangling action of its mucilage.

• You can even make a decoction or syrup from it to soothe and soften the throat.

A little history: although the plant gives its name to a famous confection since the latter was originally made from marshmallow roots, animal gelatin has long since replaced vegetable mucilage.

Precautions

• It is important to space the intake of marshmallow by 4 hours from oral medications: the mucilage of marshmallow could slow down drug absorption.
• Internal use of marshmallow is not recommended for people taking lithium.
• Marshmallow can help lower blood sugar; diabetics should monitor their blood sugar carefully if taking marshmallow internally.

Use

Powdered marshmallow root is preferred for making solid shampoos, masks, and any other cosmetic that requires a fine powder.

Marshmallow root in pieces is more often used in decoctions and oil macerates, as it is easier to filter.

Note that you can easily grind your marshmallow pieces into powder using a coffee grinder!
