Shea butter (or quality butter, uhuh) is by far our favorite vegetable butter, and we admit to having a particular fondness (read unconditional love) for the raw version.

Raw shea butter, refined... what are we talking about?

Since it is not refined, raw shea butter:

• Has a characteristic olive smell and a lovely beige tint

• Is a bit firmer and greasier than its refined version.

• Has protective, soothing, and nourishing properties. It helps maintain skin elasticity and integrity, and we love to apply it to scars and irritated skin.

Refining involves washing the butter with water and steam and filtering it repeatedly. No chemicals are involved in this process.

In its refined version, shea butter:

• Is odorless and white

• Sees its properties diminish by 50 to 80%

• Is much more stable in emulsions than raw butter. It is therefore appreciated in the manufacture of creams.

The unsaponifiable fats are different in raw shea butter and refined shea butter. For cold-process soap making, it is therefore important to know whether raw or refined butter is being used, as they cannot be interchanged without recalculating.
