Those of you who follow the blog have probably already detected my love for rolled oats. Seriously, I put them everywhere. Everywhere. Everywhere. Everywhere. And not just in my morning porridge and my latte.
Why? For one thing, it's a grain grown right here in Canada. In fact, did you know that Canada is the largest exporter of this grain in the world? That’s no small feat! Furthermore, it is a crop that requires very little water. We love that. On the other hand, it is an emollient ingredient with incomparable gentleness.
Sometimes, you don't need to go very far to find quality products. Your pantry already holds many magical ingredients for the body. Oats are proof of that! So, today I’m not sharing my best oat-based culinary recipes, but rather my three favorite uses for the body. Yay!
1. Oats in my bath
A classic, used by our grandmothers. It's quite simple: grind the flakes in a mill or mortar, put a good amount (at least 1/4 cup) in an old stocking or a small cotton bag, and let it infuse in the bath. It softens and calms reactive skin. It's magical for problem skin (eczema, psoriasis, etc.). In the winter, whenever I have the chance to take a bath, there’s definitely oats in it, whether in the form of a simple infusion, or in bath truffles or bath bombs. It’s also magical for the delicate skin of our little ones!

2. Oats in my hair
Oats are in themselves a super conditioner for hair. I concoct a little oat "milk" that I use in different ways: as a rinse (instead of conditioner), as a leave-in detangler (in a spray bottle), and as a spray to define my curls.
I put 2-3 tablespoons of ground rolled oats in a standard Mason jar, add water, and let it sit for a few hours. I then strain the whole thing. I put some in a small spray bottle (to use as a detangler or to define curls) and keep the rest in a jar (for rinses in the shower). This milk won't keep for long—about a week in the fridge—but it’s so simple to make that it’s not a problem!
3. Oats on my face
I use the same type of preparation as in point 2 to cleanse my face. I make a quick oat milk that I use to cleanse and hydrate my skin. Simple as that. I use it before applying a butter, a cream, or a serum. It hydrates my face, in addition to being soothing. You can also make masks or scrubs with ground rolled oats. For masks, just make a paste by adding yogurt, a hydrosol, honey, or lemon juice... Let your imagination run wild! For a scrub, take the little paste of rolled oats and water (or any other liquid) and use it to gently exfoliate and cleanse the face.
All these options, already close at hand in your pantry. What are you waiting for? 😉
Let me know how it goes.
Happy crafting!
P.S. I use quick-cooking oats, but you can use whatever you have on hand! It can be ground in a blender, coffee grinder, or mortar.
